Wits Lit Fest Showcases Trends in Indian Writing

Alert! A new literary festival geared around Indian writing kicks off next week in Johannesburg. Running from 23 to 28 August 2007, the Shared Histories festival – organised between various Wits University departments and Exclusive Books Hyde Park – will profile seven Indian writers and translators in conversation with their South African counterparts.

The festival lineup is rather dazzling. Writers include:

  • From India: Amitav Ghosh, Vikas Swarup, Tarun Tejpal, Pavan Varma, Ira Pandey, Namita Gokhale, Mukul Kesavan and Navdeep Suri
  • From South Africa: Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie, Gerald Kraak, Imraan Coovadia, Liz McGregor and Leon de Kock

For more information on the writers, and for the festival’s full programme, click here.

Prof. Isabel Hofmeyr, coordinator of the South Africa-India Research Project at Wits University, is one of the festival’s chief organisers; for interviews or further information, please contact her on (011) 717-4254/45 or isabel.hofmeyr@wits.ac.za.
