About The Gift of Rain

The Gift of RainThe Gift of Rain is set in British-colonial Malaya during the Second World War. The young half-Chinese and half-English Philip Hutton, who has felt like an outsider all his life, befriends a Japanese diplomat sent to Philip’s island home of Penang. The diplomat shows Philip how to harmonise opposing elements in Philip’s life – East against West, pre-destination versus free-will. But when the Japanese invade Malaya and begin their reign of terror, Philip must decide where he stands and risk everything to save those he has placed in peril and to discover who and what he really is.
