Arthur Attwell is the 2009 Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year – South Africa

Alert! Arthur Attwell, founder and Managing Director of the publishing house known for being on the technical cutting-edge, Electric Book Works, has been selected by the British Council as South Africa’s 2009 Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year.

Attwell was recently married to Michelle Matthews, a previous winner of the award. Quite a publishing power couple, then!

He will join other regional winners of the award at the upcoming London Book Fair, where the overall International Young Publisher of the Year will be announced.

It’s not certain who the other regional winners are as the British Council’s info page on the award leads with a story from 2007. But we’re sure that Attwell will prove stiff competition!

Yay! We can finally talk about it! Arthur is SUCH a deserving winner. I watch how he develops and grows his business every day, and I'm in awe. It is incredibly, incredibly hard to be an entrepreneur, especially when you're breaking new ground, as he is. The award name had the "entrepreneur" inserted into it the year after I won it: the British Council realises that it's all very well to be a shining star young publisher in an established company, but that publishers going it alone (and taking those huge, scary risks) are the ones who drive innovation in our industry. Congrats to the others who entered - I know Arthur had stiff competition in his own country, let alone internationally!

Hooray, I am ecstatic (and that's a fabulous pic of you, Arthur). This could NOT have gone to a more deserving and worthy candidate (and I know Arthur had strong competition). I've said this about Arthur before, and in other forums, but he combines impeccable ethics and acute sensitivity for all aspects of the job with an unbelievable work ethic. Plus he's fun to work with. My best employer by far. (This is a man who went into the office on his wedding day to ensure that a tardy client had indeed paid me.) Yay yay yay, and I do hope you win.

And that reminds me, Cape Town bloggers, tea today will be taken at the Book Lounge at 6pm. (Rustum, if you want a lift, just show up at my possie at about 5.45.) Our special guest will be Tiger, the dog of Alex Smith. And this is quite the wrong forum, but I am so relieved, I have to share: Meggie tested negative for feline Aids and leukemia. I was so relieved, I didn't care when handed a bill that came to R1800, with more to come, as Lily is going in for tests too. The taxman is going to see a rather large sum under "Rodent Control for Home Office" on my my next submission.

Thank you everyone! It's a huge honour, especially since I know that the judges had a hard time choosing between the candidates – those I know about I really admire, so it must have been close. It was, after all, the third time I'd applied for the nomination, and I'm sure at some stage they reward persistence.
