Alert! The shortlists for the 2009 M-Net Literary Awards have been announced. This year, there are six awards, each worth R30 000, in three language categories: English, Afrikaans and “African”, which includes TshiVenda, XiTsonga, SePedi, and SeSotho.

Within each language categories there are two awards: a “main” literary award and an award for the work that has the best prospects of being turned into a film.

Several BOOK SA members are on the shortlists: Tsireledzo Mushoma (Nne na inwi), Anne Landsman (The Rowing Lesson), Rosamund Kendal (Karma Suture), Mike Nicol (Payback) and André Brink (Ander Lewens).

Several authors have been listed in both the Main and Film categories – raising the chances that one or two of them could walk away with R60 000 on the night. The M-Net awards final ceremony will take place alongside the the 2009 Via Afrika Awards on 13 June 2009 – the richest evening in African letters (R360 000 will be awarded to writers).

Unlike most of the Via Afrika Awards, the M-Net gongs are open to books from all publishers. Here are the six 2009 M-Net Literar Awards shortlists:

Congratulations all! Nice to see that Michiel Heyn's suffragette novel is up there. Delighted to see krimis represented, esp Stalwart Mike's Payback. And I'm doing cartwheels to see Ms Tsireledzo Mushoma's name up there not once, but twice. Was thinking just the other day that she had been awfully quiet...am missing my dose of Lulu and Cherie, or are the gals too busy training for the Two Oceans to blog? Hope this shortlisting inspires you to keep us posted :)
