Podcast: Wole Soyinka's Visit to South Africa for the BBC

Wole Soyinka & Zukiswa Wanner

Alert! Nigeria’s Nobel literature laureate Wole Soyinka visited South Africa in March, recording a series of interviews for the BBC with the likes of Albie Sachs, Antjie Krog and Karabo Kgoleng, BOOK SA members Zukiswa Wanner, Imraan Coovadia, Rustum Kozain and Siphiwo Mahala, and several others.

The recordings have been published by the BBC under the rubric “South Africa’s Path to Freedom”. Although the accompanying text is so quaint it ccan set one’s teeth on edge – Coovadia, for instance, is described as “a young South African professor of Indian origin, who gives an insight into the generational changes in attitudes towards Apartheid” – the audio makes for terrific listening.
