Spend an Evening with (Most of) the Sunday Times Literary Awards Shortlistees (Plus: Win Tickets to the Awards Night)

Alert! For the first time in living memory – OK, for the first time in BOOK SA’s living memory – the Sunday Times is lowering the drawbridge to the citadel of its annual literary awards, and offering ordinary literary punters the chance to wine and dine with (most of) this year’s ten shortlisted authors, as well as to win tickets to the actual awards evening.

The three authors who won’t be at the supper at The Local Grill in Joburg’s Parktown North on July 14th are JM Coetzee, André Brink and Albie Sachs. No real surprises there – except, perhaps, Coetzee, who is known to hugely enjoy the spontaneous conviviality of such occasions.

The cost of the do is R270 per person, “including four courses, Lipton Iced Teas, coffee and gratuity PLUS a three month subscription to the Sunday Times.” Click here for information on the menu and the event; and if you’d like to book, call Thembi on 011 280 3381 or email goodtimes@sundaytimes.co.za.

Meanwhile, ten days after supper at The Local Grill, we arrive at the business end of the Literary Awards: the evening when the winners are announced. You can be present at that occasion, too – and this time you don’t even have to pay! To stand a chance of winning two seats at the banquet at Summer Place, SMS “Awards” to 41933 with your full name & ID number. The competition ends 13 July at noon; winners’ names will be published on 18 July, and the Sunday Times will make final arrangements with the winners between the 18th and the 24th.

Good luck to all who enter!

(Oh, and good luck to the authors, too.)
