Sunday Times Alan Paton Award Interview: Tymon Smith with James Ngculu

James Ngculu’s The Honour to Serve is shortlisted for the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award for non-fiction. The newspaper’s Tymon Smith talked to Ngculu about his book:

The Honour to Serve

Why did you decide to write this book now?

I had been thinking of doing something to immortalise our struggle and the people who served in MK from the 1976 period onwards. So, round about 2004-5, I decided in earnest to write this book and I gave it this title – The Honour To Serve. I did not have dedicated time to write. I wrote whenever I had a gap in my schedule to scribble – until I came out with this product.

There have not been many books written about this period in the movement’s history. Why do you think this is?

I think many of our people are intimidated, or simply do not have the time to write. For others, writing is difficult. Sometimes people thought the story was known and there was no further need to tell it. So, sadly, no book emerged from this period.
