Andy Petersen and Stephen Watson win the Percy Fitzpatrick Prize and Thomas Pringle Award

Andy PetersenStephen Watson

Alert! Teenage author Andy Petersen and South Africa’s man of letters at the Cape, Stephen Watson, have been named as the recipients of the English Academy‘s Percy Fitzpatrick Prize for youth literature and the Thomas Pringle Award for short stories. They win R7 000 and R2 000 respectively.

Daniel Fox and the Jester's LegacyThe Music in the IceThe Academy’s judges also singled out three honorable mentions: for youth literature, Gillian D’Achada for Sharkey’s Son and BOOK SA member SA Partridge for Fuse; and for short stories, Sandisile Tshuma for “Arrested Development”.

Petersen wins for his first novel, Daniel Fox and the Jester’s Legacy – published, if memory serves, when the author was just seventeen – and Watson for a short story that appeared in New Contrast, “Buiten Street”. Watson’s latest book is a collection of essays, The Music in the Ice.

Of Daniel Fox, the judges said: “the novel is interesting, with engaging complex characters, an imaginatively constructed world and surprising plot twists”; of “Buiten Street”, that the story “captures the poignancy of the struggle we all go through to accept and understand the experiences that form us”. See the complete press release below.

These awards close the Academy’s 2010 season. It is now accepting entries for the 2011 round, which will see deliberations made over the Olive Schreiner prize for drama, the Sol Plaatje Prize for literary translation and the Thomas Pringle awards for reviews, poetry and literary articles. Congratulations everyone, esp Stephen and Sally. V. pleased to see Fuse up there in the honorable mentions, against tough competition.

I'm so stoked that Andy won. I'm very happy that Fuse got an honorable mention. Like you said Helen, the competition was tough.
