Video: Lewis Nkosi on “Fugitive Memories of Place”

Mating BirdsStill Beating the DrumKZN Literary Tourism funded a video-interview with author and critic Lewis Nkosi, who passed away last year September. The documentary is dated from 2002, and in a strange stylistic flourish, the questions are sung – literally, in a semi-operatic style – to Nkosi.

When asked why he writes, Nkosi says that one could put the same question to animals: “Why is a donkey braying? Is it because it’s hungry, or is it because it wants to communicate with other donkeys?”

He says that for writers there is “this obvious need to represent the world. Both for others and to yourself. It’s odd how after I’ve written a play or a story, it’s like the characters seem to take on their own lives and identities. I’ve obviously created a parallel world. And both worlds are valid.”

Fast forward the shots of UKZN to watch the interview with Nkosi:
