The 2010/2011 University of Johannesburg Creative Writing Prize Shortlists (English)
Alert! The SA Lit awards season has officially begun. Today, the University of Johannesburg released the shortlists for its annual Creative Writing Prize for works in English, one of South Africa’s richest literary gongs.
The prize rewards merit in writing without respect to genre – non-fiction competes alongside fiction and poetry – and is given in “main” and “debut” categories. The main prize winner pockets R60 000, while the debut winner receives R20 000. More technically:
The UJ Prize is awarded to the writer of the best original creative work in English published in the previous calendar year. The UJ Debut Prize is awarded to the writer of the best original creative debut work in English published in the previous calendar year.
Last year’s winners were Imraan Coovadia and Jacob Dlamini.
BOOK SA members Lauren Beukes and James Clelland feature on this year’s lists (Clelland’s book also won the EU Literary Award) – as does the late Stephen Watson.
Without ado, here are the lists, one of which is rather longer than the other:
