Joey Hi-Fi’s Zoo City Cover Wins at the British Science Fiction Association Awards

Zoo City Cover

Alert! Graphic artist Joey Hi-Fi – aka Dale Halvorsen – won in the “Best Art” category at the British Science Fiction Association‘s annual awards night, held at the Illustrious Eastercon, Birmingham, at the weekend. Hi-Fi won for his remarkable cover art for Zoo City by Lauren Beukes. You can view the artwork his was competing against here.

SA Partridge & Dale HalvorsenBOOK SA received the news by text message from Beukes, who attended the awards as a “Best Novel” shortlistee. Beukes, alas, was pipped at the post: “I lost to Ian McDonald – as expected,” she wrote to us. (McDonald’s The Dervish House thrilled Cory Doctorow, among others.) But she was “over the moon” about Hi-Fi’s cover win.

It’s not certain what Hi-Fi receives – apart from accolades and the new commissions that doubtless come along with them – but BOOK SA is certainly willing to add a bottle of bubbly into the mix. What say, Dale?

Meanwhile, Beukes will be holding her breath at another UK awards ceremony tomorrow night (27 April), where the winner of the Arthur C Clarke Award, for which she is shortlisted, will be announced. All best of luck, Lauren!

And heartiest congratulations to Joey Hi-Fi!

I think you should be congratulated again, Lauren. Being a finalist in the BFSA, and Arthur Clarke, is a huge achievement (and now the John Campbell at the forthcoming Hugos!).

It was just unlucky that you were up against some of the heaviest hitters re novels in this award for years - not only the Ian MacDonald, but also the Bacigalupi. That won't happen every time.

Brilliant news RE Dale's win (not suprised though! That cover is just superb).
Disappointed Lauren didn't bag this one, but still holding out for the Clarkes. But either way, amazing achievement of course.
Hope the sloth hoodie brings luck (not that it is needed)

congratulations both... I've been and checked the cover competition and am very interested to note that all the others depict outside/outer space/extra-planetary stuff (I'm a visual arts klutz and have very few words to talk what I see) whereas Hi-fi's Zoo City cover is the only one that has a person-interior/internal psyche effect. All those eyes, the too-close-up bits that have your neck hairs prickle ... the cover kinda shows/feels sci-fi/paranormal whereas the others did more of a 'tell'. Something like that... maybe they all reflect faithfully, the authors' approaches in their texts - as I understand is the case with Zoo City. I really must get off my butt already and order the copy I've been meaning to get for goddess knows how long

Thrilled for Dale -- what a well-deserved win. And kudos to Jacana, who were fearless in their approach to the cover. Then there's Lauren -- three international short-listings for a local writer, against stellar competition. I am in awe -- this is HUGE. Am hobbling around with crossed fingers and toes for the Arthur C. Clarke award...
