Joey Hi-Fi’s Zoo City Cover Wins at the British Science Fiction Association Awards
Alert! Graphic artist Joey Hi-Fi – aka Dale Halvorsen – won in the “Best Art” category at the British Science Fiction Association‘s annual awards night, held at the Illustrious Eastercon, Birmingham, at the weekend. Hi-Fi won for his remarkable cover art for Zoo City by Lauren Beukes. You can view the artwork his was competing against here.
BOOK SA received the news by text message from Beukes, who attended the awards as a “Best Novel” shortlistee. Beukes, alas, was pipped at the post: “I lost to Ian McDonald – as expected,” she wrote to us. (McDonald’s The Dervish House thrilled Cory Doctorow, among others.) But she was “over the moon” about Hi-Fi’s cover win.
It’s not certain what Hi-Fi receives – apart from accolades and the new commissions that doubtless come along with them – but BOOK SA is certainly willing to add a bottle of bubbly into the mix. What say, Dale?
Meanwhile, Beukes will be holding her breath at another UK awards ceremony tomorrow night (27 April), where the winner of the Arthur C Clarke Award, for which she is shortlisted, will be announced. All best of luck, Lauren!
And heartiest congratulations to Joey Hi-Fi!
