Finish and KlaarThe Unlikely Secret AgentSteeped in BloodFighting for JusticeThe War for South Africa

Alert! The 2011 Sunday Times Alan Paton Award shortlist was announced this evening at the Franschhoek Literary Festival. It’s the 22nd instance of the award, which comes with a cheque for R75 000.

The five shortlistees emerged from a longlist that numbered forty-four titles. Politics past and politics present dominate, with Jay Naidoo and Ronnie Kasrils struggle memoirs competing with Adriaan Basson’s contemporary fall-from-grace tale and Bill Nasson’s Anglo-Boer War History. David Klatzow’s Steeped in Blood is the outsider title, being not overtly concerned with struggle for power and freedom on a grand scale.

Notable absences include Antony Atlbeker (Fruit of a Poisoned Tree) and former winner Peter Harris (Birth). Click here for the complete 2011 longlist.

Tafelberg scored the most kudos from the publishers’ perspective, with two titles among the five. Without further ado, the 2011 shortlist:
