Save Boekehuis! An Open Letter to Media24 (with Petition and Signatories)

Alert! The rather distressing news that Media24 has decided to close Auckland Park’s famous Boekehuis bookshop – a rumour that had been circulating for several months – was apparently made official yesterday, according to various sources (including this one).

Author Mark Gevisser and a host of other writers have initiated a petition in a last-ditch attempt to prevent the venerable bookshop from being shuttered. Boekehuis, considered something of a literary haven in South Africa, is known in particular for its stimulating Saturday Voices/Saterdagstemme programme. For a sense of the bookshop’s importance in South Africa’s literary landscape, you need merely look at the first handful of signatories to Gevisser’s petition, below.

You can add your name to the petition by listing it in the comments section at the bottom of this post (only registered users may comment; click here to register with Books LIVE).

Here’s the “Save Boekehuis” petition – and scroll down for excerpts from some of the letters that have accompanied the signatures:

Open Letter to Koos Bekker, CEO, Naspers; Esmare Weideman, CEO Media24; Eloise Wessels, CEO Media24 Books

Dear Mr Bekker, Ms Weideman and Ms Wessels

As writers, publishers, readers, and buyers of books, we are deeply distressed that Media24 is considering shutting down the Boekehuis in Auckland Park. While we understand Media24′s financial considerations, we cannot emphasise enough the importance of the unique space it has created for cultural and intellectual activity in Johannesburg.

Firstly, the Boekehuis public readings and discussions have become among the most important gatherings in the Johannesburg literary calendar. As such, they have done much to promote not only literary talent and ideas, but the profile of both the bookshop itself and Media24. There are no comparable forums in Johannesburg, and the loss of Boekehuis is a blow against the culture of reading and debate, which is so crucial to the well-being of our democracy, particularly given the steady erosion of book culture in South Africa.

Secondly, in the era of on-line commerce, the Boekehuis staff have set the bar for selecting publications of quality and worth for South African readers. Bookshops,  where people of all ages who care about reading can gather and browse – and buy books too, of course -  are at the core of the kind of civil, deliberative culture that we believe South Africa so urgently needs. And when they are as beautiful and welcoming as the Boekehuis, all the more so.

For these reasons, we would urge you to reconsider your decision.

It makes absolutely no sense to close the Boekehuis! It is a very depressing prospect. Not just Johannesburg without Boekehuis, but the notion that someone thinks it is a good idea to close it!

How ironic that while media houses have protested against the threats to public debate and intellectual freedom that the Secrecy Bill is seen to pose, they are considering closing down one such space themselves. Come on, this is about more than selling books for profit. It's about what a company like Naspers can contribute to a culture of reading, discussion and debate.

I realise that print media are on the way out, but Boekehuis can survive with a commercial internet presence.

www.boekehuis.co.za takes you to the M24 page and no further.

A Google search for boekehuis leads you only to various blogs and news articles.

No serious attempt seems to have been made to develop a successful business model.

In this world of pirated content and smstalk, "quality"and "genuine" seem to have become forgotten words. Boekehuis is not just a bookstore, it's a meme. Please don't throw it away.

Interesting to note the outrage on 702 Talkradio the other day re the closure of the BoekeHuis.

If all those people calling for the "preservation of this valuable cultural institution" had actually patronised the place (i.e. put their money where their mouths are), the BoekeHuis wouldn't have had to close.

An academic called the radio show to add his vote to the call to preserve the store - yet he even admitted on air that he'd only ever been there once - for a friend's book launch. Yet he expects someone else to bear the financial loss of keeping the shop going, just in case he ever feels moved to pop in...

Contrary to the claims of some, the wealth of the company that owned the bookstore (Media 24) does *not* somehow impose a moral obligation upon them to keep the shop going. If the community doesn't support the shop, then it has sent a clear financial signal that the shop is not wanted. It's known as "voting with your wallet".

I see all these "prominent personalities" above, calling for the shop to be kept open - but let's see who amongst them will risk his or her own cash to do so.

The CEO's suggestion that "fond memories" would be a substitute for the actual Boekehuis is vacuous at best, downright offensive at worst. Those of us who've been around long enough heard that kind of empty talk about the Vanguard Bookshop

As a writer and academic who relies on the Boekehuis for books that I cannot find elsewhere, I am disappointed that Media24 cannot see the way to use their current and growing profits to support this extremely important Johannesburg's institution and the future of publishing in SA
