Roger Smith on the Publication of Dust Devils: “My Most Personal Book So Far”

Dust DevilsMixed BloodIn an interview with the Witness, Roger Smith reflects on the publication of his latest crime thriller, Dust Devils, which he calls his “most personal book so far” but also “the most challenging to write”.

Smith will follow Dust Devils with the release of a new book, titled Capture, in August this year:

Dust Devils focuses on tough issues such as injustice, HIV/Aids, rape and murder. Do you think the book is a reflection of South Africa as it is today?

Dust Devils is my most personal book so far, and was the most challenging to write. I wanted to write about things that outraged me. Scared me. Saddened me. But I’m not up on a pulpit here.

I write thrillers (hopefully page-turners) and there’s nothing more tedious than the forward thrust of a crime novel being interrupted as a writer sermonises.
