Nominees for 2012 Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards Announced

Alert! The nominees for the 2012 Fleur du Cap Awards have been announced, and though they celebrate excellence in theatre, there are several items of particular literary interest to us on the list.

Fleur du Cap Theatre AwardsAuthor, actor and activist Pieter-Dirk Uys has been nominated for a 2012 Fleur du Cap Award in the category “Best Performance in a Revue, Cabaret and or Solo Performance” for his one-man show, Desperate First Ladies.

The South African production of Ariel Dorfman’s Purgatorio has received three nominations, in the categories “Best Performace by a Lead Actor in a Play” (Dawid Minnaar as A man), “Best Director” (Clare Stopford) and “Best Lighting Design” (Patrick Curtis). Dorfman, a Chilean playwright and novelist, visited South Africa to deliver the Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture in 2010.

Ouroboros, a production by award-winning puppeteer Janni Younge created in association with the Handspring Puppet Company, is up for the Fleur du Cap in the categories “Best Lighting Design” (Mannie Manim), “Best Sound Design and or Original Score” (Daniel Eppel) and “Best Puppetry Design” (Janni Younge). Younge recently joined the Handspring Puppet Company as Associate Director.

Athol Fugard’s The Bird Watchers, which had its world premiere at The Fugard Theatre on 10 May 2011, is nominated for two awards – “Best Set and or Props Design” (Saul Radomsky) and “Best Sound Design and or Original Score” (James Webb). Fugard received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre following the conclusion of the play.

A new play by Marlene van Niekerk, Die Kortstondige Raklewe van Anastasia W, is up for awards in the categories “Best Costume and or Mask Design” (Marthinus Basson), “Best Sound and or Original Score” (Mr Cat and the Jackal & Braam du Toit) as well as for “Best New South African Play” (Marlene van Niekerk)

Lastly, Books LIVE member Jane Taylor‘s play, After Cardenio, which premiered at UCT’s Anatomy Theatre in August last year, is nominated in the categories “Best Performance by a Supporting Actor” (Jeroen Kranenburg as Town Crier/Don Quixote) and “Best Puppetry Design” (Gavin Younge).

The 47th annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, 18 March, at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. Limited tickets are available to the public at a cost of R150 – bookings can be made on Computicket.
