RIP Lawrence Anthony, the Elephant Whisperer

Lawrence Anthony, affectionately known as The Elephant Whisperer for his dedication to the rehabilitation of the African Elephant, has passed away at the age of 62.

The Elephant WhispererBabylon\'s ArkThe Last RhinosBorn in Johannesburg in 1950, Anthony was the owner and head of conservation at KwaZulu-Natal’s Thula Thula Game reserve and the author of several bestsellers including The Elephant Whisperer: Learning About Life, Loyalty and Freedom From a Remarkable Herd of Elephants, which has sold over 90 000 copies worldwide. Anthony was also known for his bold ventures in conservation, most notably when he braved the 2003 US bombing of Iraq to rescue a pack of starving lions.

In April this year, Pan Macmillan will release The Last Rhinos, a new book by Anthony which documents the conservationist’s bid to tackle poaching and save the Congo’s Northern white rhino from extinction.

Dear all

It is with a very deep sadness that I advise that Lawrence Anthony, co-author of “The Elephant Whisperer” and “Babylon’s Ark”, passed away last night from a heart attack.

Gill Campbell phoned me earlier with the report of his death and I have just spoken to Shannon, of the Earth Organisation, who confirmed this devastating news. Lawrence apparently had a heart attack in December 2011 and suffered damage to his heart. This resulted in the subsequent heart attack last night and he died in his sleep.

A press release is currently being prepared by the Earth Organisation, which will be published confirming what we now know.

I’m sure each and every one of you joins me in sending our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and staff and we will remember him, not only for the wonderful and entertaining evening he sponsored last year for the benefit of Christmas Fair Fund, but also for the absolutely incredible contribution he made to conservation as a whole and especially to the rehabilitation of his beloved African Elephants.

God bless and love

Books LIVE sends condolences to Anthony’s family and friends.
