The schadenfreude with which SA’s chattering classes greeted the summary ejection of Thabo Mbeki from the presidency in September 2008 helped to obscure an important issue.
The manner of his removal was constitutionally dubious, and the country is in his debt for putting nation before self and resigning in a dignified manner .
