Press release:
At last, a new event on the Johannesburg cultural scene! Kingsmead College announced today that they will be hosting the Kingsmead Book Fair to be held on the fabulous school grounds on the 1st and 2nd June, 2012. The Kingsmead Book Fair will become an annual event open to the public and will be tailored to include attractions aimed at children of all ages, young adults as well as adults who share a love of reading and literature.
Johannesburg is in need of a vibrant and exciting cultural event that supports the sophisticated intellectual interests of many that live here and our vision is to create a passion for books, literature and learning. The Fair will become a significant event in Johannesburg in a similar way that the Franschhoek Literary Festival has captured people’s imagination in the Western Cape. The Kingsmead Book Fair aims to promote reading and literacy. Children will be coming from schools around Johannesburg, and we will facilitate participation from less privileged schools, too. This Book Fair is part of a broader effort to foster a love of books and reading.
“We are excited about the Kingsmead Book Fair and are very proud to be bringing an important literary event to Johannesburg. Our vision is to create a passion for books, literature and learning and we believe that a Book Fair allows us to share our vision with the broader Johannesburg community,” says Sally Herbert, Coordinator of the Kingsmead Book Fair Organising Committee.
“We have a fantastic list of authors and celebrities confirmed including, John van de Ruit, Shaun Johnson, Piet Byleveld, David Bullard as well as Gareth Cliff, Mike Nicol and Margie Orford amongst others. Most exciting is that Johannesburg’s very own book authority, Jenny Crwys-Williams, will be presenting some of the workshops and author sessions. Schools from around Johannesburg will be involved and an integral component of the Fair will be an outreach programme aimed at sharing knowledge and resources with less privileged schools in our region. There will be something for everyone – from children’s authors to crime and politics as well as authors’ stories on getting published, book signings and story-telling.”
About the Kingsmead Book Fair
- We first held this fair in 2011, for our students and their friends and families, and it was extremely popular and successful.
- There will be different streams and sessions, catering for younger children, teens and adults.
- In keeping with international trends, the Kingsmead Book Fair will be highly interactive and engaging, and will provide a unique platform for readers, writers and publishers to connect and collaborate. It will showcase a wide range of genres from popular to classic, educational to pure entertainment, and will also focus on key trends in the literary and publishing world such as the growth and importance of e-books and e-learning.
- There will be a fun, festive atmosphere, with food and drinks for sale, author signings, book sales and musicians to entertain.
- We already have buy-in from the leading publishers, from retail chain Exclusive Books, and from popular media personalities who will be on hand to add some spice to the occasion, with Gareth Cliff, Jenny Crwys-Williams, Tracy Going, David Bullard and Michele Magwood forming part of the diverse roster of MCs.
