Caine Prize Fiction Friday: “Hunter Emmanuel” by Constance Myburgh

Constance MyburghOver the past few weeks we’ve brought you the Caine Prize for African Writing shortlisted stories by Kenya’s Billy Kahora, Nigeria’s Rotimi Babatunde, Malawi’s Stanley Kenani and Zimbabwe’s Melissa Tandiwe Myambo. Now we’ve come to the final shortlistee, South African writer Constance Myburgh. Read her short story “Hunter Emmanuel”, originally published in Issue 6 of Jungle Jim:

Hunter Emmanuel shouldered his chainsaw and looked up at the trees. That, he thought, is some crazy shit. The leg hung from a branch three-quarters up the pine’s trunk. It was a woman’s leg he thought, thought you could never know one hundred percent, and it had been cut off right at the crotch, at the dip he liked so much, probably his favourite place in a chick. Except for other obvious locations. No way to tell what colour it was either: The leg was smeared with grime and dirt and had started to go black. It had rained the night before. He wondered what sort of string was holding it up there.

A commotion had begun behind him. The tree was, like all the others, marked with a great yellow ‘X’, so it had to come down. But the leg posed a problem. The foreman was deciding whether to send one of the guys up to get it down, or whether to chop the tree and then deal with it.
