Write or Die: Q&A with Mr Fox Author Helen Oyeyemi

Mr FoxIn celebration of the release of Mr Fox in paperback, The Guardian has featured a Q&A with Nigerian-born author Helen Oyeyemi. Oyeyemi adds life to a set of seemingly mundane questions, suggesting the use of the kamikaze-style app “Write or Die” when asked for a “writing tip”:

How did you come to write Mr Fox?

I read Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and instructed myself to write a linear suspense story based on Bluebeard, complete with locked doors and a brooding, irresistible wife-killer. My instructions to myself were completely ignored and I ended up going on a jaunt through a Bluebeard kaleidoscope. I’m glad it happened like that, though.
