King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa, by Adam Hochschild, (Pan, £9.99).

It’s impossible to understand why the Democratic Republic of Congo is in today’s pitiful state without examining its grotesque colonial history. Hochschild’s book is a devastating indictment of Belgium’s King Leopold, who paid the explorer Henry Morton Stanley to carve out a vast personal colony and then looted it.
