Every publication that I’ve ever written for has its own style to keep uniformity and consistency in all its different stories. The old “Aunty Argus” insisted that this city be called “Maritzburg”. When you jumped ship to the newsroom of another company, one of the many new style rules you’d have to learn was to add the “Pieter”. It’s always a good idea to have the style guide close at hand.
The Write Stuff, by DJ Dykman, JDU Geldenhuys and EE Viljoen-Smook, is a style guide that is not in line with the ways of any specific publishing house. Instead, it presents a range of handy tips to deal with things that writers may encounter, but perhaps do not have time to check up on, and end up presenting something clumsy.
- The Write Stuff: The Style Guide with a Difference (2nd Edition) by Bittie Viljoen-Smook, Dave Dykman and Johan Geldenhuys
