Jonathan Ball Publishers recently produced two fine, thought-provoking non-fiction works: Michael Morris’s Apartheid: An Illustrated History and Anton Harber’s Diepsloot. The authors are both journalists, and their books make interesting companion pieces that deal with a past that seeps into the present, and threatens to contaminate the future. Morris’s Illustrated History conjures up a past that is, as Harber’s foray into sprawling Diepsloot demonstrates, not yet past.
