Carrots for Invisible Furies by Michiel Heyns and The Big Stick by Richard de Nooy

Invisible FuriesThe Big StickVerdict: carrots

FICTION Invisible Furies

By Michiel Heyns

Heyns’ sixth novel is like a leisurely stroll through sunlit Paris: beautiful, unhurried and contemplative. Thirty years ago, the mild-mannered Christopher Turner travelled to Paris with his best friend, Daniel. Now middle aged, he reluctantly returns to the city at the latter’s behest, to convince Daniel’s son, Eric, to return to take up residence on the family farm in Franschhoek. But is this what is best for Eric when the city appears to have transformed him from loutish layabout to a gentleman of great charm and sophistication? Paris is, of course a city much written about, and one steeped in cliché.
