Quick Review: Redemption Song by Amanda Coetzee
By Julia Beffon for The Times:
Harry O’Connor, the enigmatic hero of Amanda Coetzee’s debut Bad Blood, is one of the most intriguing characters to emerge in recent crime fiction.
In Redemption Song, O’Conner – known as Badger by the Travellers community who raised him – is on leave of absence from the police force after the traumatic events recounted in the previous novel. However, he cannot resist a plea from Emily Meadows (his love interest from Bad Blood) to rescue an abused woman and her child being held in Albania.
Coetzee might live in Rustenburg, but has no trouble in setting the action in modern Europe. Scrupulous research allows her to not only paint a fairly accurate picture of modern Traveller life, but to build a powerful case on behalf of people who have long been hated and feared.
Redemption Song is a rollicking good thriller.
