What I’m Reading: Sarah Wild

I’m re-reading The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. These two books, part of his Kingkiller Chronicles, vie with The Night Circus for my best reads of 2011. The problem with fantasy novels is that they have a tendency to be formulaic – strong man of war on a quest of national importance meets clingy female and together they take on the world to defeat the Ultimate Evil and, to add insult to injury, the writing is generally tedious, bogged down with description that leaves you afloat on a sea of boredom. Rothfuss’s work isn’t like that. Not only is the world rich and the characters inspiring and flawed at the same time, the man’s writing sings.
At the centre of the story is Kvothe, gypsy, adventurer, lover, musician and greatest magician in history. But something has forced Kvothe to fake his own death and assume the identity of an inn keeper. And while war rages outside the inn – something that you are sure Kvothe had a hand in – he refuses to step into the fray and use the power you know he has.
Warning: do not start reading this book if you have work the next day or you’ll suffer that sinking feeling when you hear the birds start singing and realise you’ve read the night away. With its musical writing driving the narrative forward, each page makes you ask the magical question of all fiction: “What happens next?”
