Of course their moral, spiritual and political lives are galaxies apart, but they share the same contagious enthusiasm for their beliefs. Desmond’s cackling laugh makes everyone smile. And the very fact that people refer to him as the Arch or Desmond and not, outside of official circles and international newspapers, as Bishop Tutu—points to the fact that he’s lodged himself in South African hearts as a friend.
