John van de Ruit has elevated starch to an art form. The Durban-based author’s hugely successful Spud series has been on bookshelves since 2005 and has sold more than 500,000 copies. The fourth and final instalment of the series sees John “Spud” Milton set off to Michaelhouse to begin his matric year, hoping his shaky grasp of mathematics won’t prevent him graduating with the rest of the Crazy Eight gang. His lack of numerical acumen is just one of the many challenges he faces in his last school year, the others being learning to drive and finding a date for the matric dance.
