She hogs headlines as SA’s own Kim Kardashian, and now self-styled “queen of bling” Khanyi Mbau is also commandeering our bookshops with a biography that tracks her torrid, limelight-chasing life so far.
The obvious question is: should we care? And yes, we should — because this gold-digging socialite should not be dismissed as a grotesque symptom of an increasingly materialistic society. She could be seen either as an unconventional postfeminist icon who goes after what she wants, or as setting a dangerous example to young women that chasing sugar daddies and a vulgarly ostentatious lifestyle is a desirable path to follow. That while some starve in squatter camps, she is content to enjoy her croissant with blue cheese for breakfast.
