John Eppel Considers Groundwork by Rustum Kozain, Compares it to Kelwyn Sole’s Absent Tongues

GroundworkAbsent TonguesJohn Eppel has written a review of Groundwork by Rustum Kozain for SLiPNet.

Eppel compares Groundwork to Kelwyn Sole‘s poetry collection, Absent Tongues, and wonders whether a new school of poetry is forming around these two poets:

One of the images from Kelwyn Sole’s poetry collection, Absent Tongues, which lingers in my mind, is that of the garden spray:

Late-rising moon:
a sprinkler, forgotten,
sighs to and fro
across the lawn
(“Poems of the Sea for Me”)

Consequently I was intrigued to see that Rustum Kozain also uses this image:

while outside the sprinklers
drizzle softly in the garden
(“The Adoration of Cats”)

Oh read this, please please please. No-one writes poetry reviews (although this is more of a meditation) like this any more. It is a joy. It has sent me back to both these collections with new questions and insights. Perhaps the only place John and I differ is that if a poem makes me weep, I am grateful, not resentful. Although that may have been slightly tongue-in-cheek.
