How cool would it be if EB marketed local prize-winning books as well? So Nineveh, Homemaking for the Down-at-Heart etc as well as local series like the second in the Deadlands series. Just a thought.

Let me reply, Sally, as a denizen of the EB empire (and at the risk of attracting heaps o' scorn).

EB has two major yearly promotions: Homebru in the spring and The Wish List during the festive season.

Homebru does precisely what you're suggesting: EB gets together with the publishers and we jointly select up to 30 local titles for a major promotional push in the EB stores (and online), which involves a considerable outlay in advertising and promo material spend.

It isn't perfect, but Homebru definitely has an effect on the buying and reading public :)

The Wish List, meanwhile, promotes a mix of local and international books, with emphasis on titles that work well as gifts. It's not particularly literary, but it is supportive of local books.

One half of EB's main campaign calendar, then, is dedicated purely to SA Lit. Could be worse. Cue scorn!

Tiah, that was EXACTLY my response! (complete with happy dance). Plus on a lazy afternoon, I'll take the Marian Keyes as well. And for an afternoon with a glass of wine, the van der Vyfer.

That is, indeed, cause for celebration. But let it be noted that we do NOT encourage upstanding members of our forum to behave :)
