The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng Longlisted for the 2012 Man Asian Literary Prize

The Garden of Evening MistsAlert! The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng has been longlisted for the 2012 Man Asian Literary Prize.

The judging panel will be chaired by literary critic and journalist Maya Jaggi, who will be joined by novelists Monique Truong and Vikram Chandra. The longlist consists of 15 books from nine Asian countries and includes Silent House by Orhan Pamuk and Another Country by Anjali Joseph.

The shortlist of 5 or 6 books will be announced on 9 January 2013 and the winner will be announced in Hong Kong on 14 March. The winner will receive 30 000 US dollars.

The Garden of Evening Mists was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize earlier this year, which was won by Hilary Mantel’s Bring up the Bodies.

Novels showcasing the power of the writing emerging across the whole breadth of Asia were put on display today as the fifteen books longlisted for the 2012 Man Asian Literary Prize were unveiled.

Nine different Asian countries are represented, many of them seen afresh through the eyes of women, migrants and story-tellers on the margins. The list also includes an early intricate and stunning book by Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk, now appearing in English for the first time.
