Podcast: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Reads Ama Ata Aidoo’s “No Sweetness Here”

The Guardian has shared a podcast of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie reading Ama Ata Aidoo’s short story “No Sweetness Here”, taken from Aidoo’s book Diplomatic Pounds.

Adichie, author of The Thing Around Your Neck, commented that the story “is the kind of beautiful, old-fashioned social realism” that she is drawn to and said that it does what “all good literature should: it has something to say and it entertains you.”

Listen to Adichie reading the story:

The stories in No Sweetness Here, of post-independence Ghana in the 1960s, are written beautifully and wisely and with great subtlety. The characters lie uneasily between old and new, live in rural and urban areas and struggle to deal with the unpleasant surprises of independence.
