Videos: JM Coetzee, Ahdaf Soueif, Gillian Slovo and Others Protest Against Liu Xiaobo’s Imprisonment
JM Coetzee, Gillian Slovo and Ahdaf Soueif are among those writers from across the globe who’ve added their voices to Frontline Defenders and PEN International’s campaign to oppose the imprisonment of Chinese Nobel Peace Prize laureate and poet Liu Xiaobo. In December 2009 Xiaobo was sentenced to 11 years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power” and, since then, his wife has also been placed under house arrest.
Coetzee, Slovo, Soueif and other well-known writers such as Salman Rushdie, Seamus Heaney and Paul Auster, have contributed videos of themselves reading Xiaobo’s poem “One Letter is Enough” and extracts from his statement “I Have No Enemies” to the campaign. Writers from all over the world are invited to also add their videos to the Frontline Defenders website.
