Excerpt: Read the First Chapter of JM Coetzee’s The Childhood of Jesus (in Dutch)
JM Coetzee’s new novel, The Childhood of Jesus, will be released locally by Random House Struik in March but if you can’t wait to see what the Nobel laureate’s latest has in store, you can take a peek at the book’s first chapter – in Dutch.
De kinderjaren van Jezus will be released by Coetzee’s Dutch publisher Uitgeverij Cossee in February and they have already made the first chapter of the book available on their website. In the following excerpt, a man and the boy he cares for arrive in the city Novilla, looking for a place to stay. Try your Dutch on the following piece:
De man bij de poort wijst hen op een laag, vormeloos gebouw halverwege. ‘Als jullie haast maken,’ zegt hij, ‘kunnen jullie je melden voordat ze hun deuren voor de rest van de dag sluiten.’
Ze maken haast. ‘Centro de Reubicación Novilla’ staat er op het bord.Reubicación: wat betekent dat? Geen woord dat hij heeft geleerd.
Het kantoor is groot en leeg. Warm ook – nog warmer dan buiten. Aan de andere kant strekt een houten balie zich uit over de hele breedte van het vertrek, opgedeeld doormatglazen ruiten. Tegen demuur een rij archiefladen van gelakt hout.
