Quick Review: After the Rain by Lefeedi Maja

After the RainBy Mongadi Mafata for The Times:

The beautiful and curious Palesa slips out of home to experience what smells like “after the rain” with hilarious consequences. But the neighbourhood bullies abruptly turn her little expedition into a messy and muddy experience.

Written by first-time author and businesswoman Lefeedi Maja, After the Rain is beautifully illustrated by Caroline Vos, with Palesa prancing about in her little shweshwe dress that has an imprint of the map of Africa.

Inspired by the low levels of a reading culture in South Africa, After the Rain is a short and sweet attempt at addressing the problem of literacy among children. This engaging story attempts to spark a desire to read.

Aimed at two- to seven-year-olds, the book is available in English, Tswana and Zulu. There is an interactive website – www.aftertherain.co.za – where readers can share their experiences and download illustrations to colour in the privacy of their living rooms.
