Career Opportunity: Executive Director of the Publishers’ Association of South Africa

The Publisher’s Association of South Africa is seeking an Executive Director. Applications close 15 March 2013.

Press release

The primary purpose of The Publishers’ Association of South Africa (PASA) is to promote and protect the interest, rights and responsibilities of the organisation’s members, comprising the majority of the independent publishing sector in South Africa; and to co-ordinate industry representation, including submissions to, and negotiations with, Government legislators and other relevant public and private bodies with reference to matters affecting this business sector.

An opportunity now exists for an exceptionally skilled and engaging leader to take on the pivotal role of Executive Director within PASA.

The position is based in Cape Town and will require well-defined skills associated with analysing, networking, planning, organising, controlling, communicating and leading complex work processes, activities and sectors at a strategic level.

Acting on mandate of the industry, your role will include consolidating industry work done to date, and taking the industry forward in an ever-changing and challenging publishing business environment. In addition you will be expected to act strategically in identifying issues and co-ordinate and organise key local and international partners and stakeholders to react quickly and respond positively to industry challenges.

The Executive Director liaises constructively with various stakeholder bodies including the press, the Departments of Education, South African Book Development Council, the South African Coalition for Cultural Diversity, the International Publishers’ Association, the Department of Art and Culture, the Department of Trade and Industry, LIASA, the National Library and other relevant organisations.

In particular we are looking for a well-organised and efficient publishing and /or marketing executive, with a background that includes a relevant post graduate degree and a passion for developing “a culture of reading”. Proven experience in interacting at a senior level in a business value chain coupled with the experience and ability to network with government officials and international publishing colleagues at all levels will be required.

As Executive Director you’ll be representing a R2.8 billion industry that employs over 2 000 people at all levels. We are looking for someone who is sufficiently competent and experienced to meet this challenge and we will negotiate a reward package commensurate with the importance of the role. Given the employment equity guidelines of the industry, preference will be given to candidates that comply with the above criteria and are from either one of the designated groups.

Key Executive has been retained by PASA to provide the assistance needed to conclude this appointment in a timely manner. Please direct all inquiries to Allan Pike by phone on 021 461 1848 or email your CV to to reach him ASAP or before the closing date of 15 March 2013.
