This is a book about citizenship, law and order, and belonging in post-apartheid and post-authoritarian South Africa. It hinges on the violent events and their consequences of May 2008, through which it explores the inadequate or failed response by the state to negative perceptions and relationships of hostility between mostly black South Africans in townships and inner-city urban dwellings to mostly black immigrants from the rest of Africa, commonly referred to in derogatorily as Kwerekwere.
