Joey Hi-Fi Reveals and Discusses the Covers for Charlie Human’s Forthcoming Apocalypse Now Now

Joey Hi-Fi has done it again! Dale Halvorsen (aka Hi-Fi), winner of the Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire and the British Science Fiction Award for “Best Art” for Lauren Beukes’ Zoo City and The Ranting Dragon’s Cover Battle 2012 for the cover of Chuck Wendig’s Blackbirds, has produced another two amazing covers for Charlie Human’s forthcoming Apocalypse Now Now.

Hi-Fi is also the designer of such fantastic book covers as The Spiral House by Claire Robertson, Richard de Nooy’s The Big Stick and Lauren Beukes’ latest, The Shining Girls, including a special black-and-white cover for the collector’s edition of the latter.

Hi-Fi designed two covers for Apocalypse Now Now – one for local distribution and one for the UK – as Human landed a deal with Random House Century to publish the book abroad, while Umuzi will be publishing it in South Africa. Apocalypse Now Now tells the story of 16-year-old Baxter Zevcenko, “kingpin of a porn-peddling schoolyard syndicate and a possible serial killer who suffers from weird historical dreams”.

Pornokitsch revealed the two covers and spoke to Hi-Fi about his designs. Hi-Fi describes Human’s book as “good insane” and speaks about the challenge of creating two awesome covers for the same book, an endeavour he took to calling the “Apocalypse wow wow conundrum”.

Pornokitsch: So – the contents of Apocalypse Now Now are a (frustratingly) closely guarded secret. As one of the few that have read it – what’s the book like?!

Joey Hi-Fi: It’s insane. The good insane tough. Although it did make me worry about Charlie Human’s mental state. Lauren Beukes did a great shout for the book -“Mad, dark, irreverent and wonderfully twisted in all the right ways”. I think that sums it up quite well.

Can I just say what a ridiculous talent Joey Hi-Fi is? I got to see the hardcover of Claire Robertson's The Spiral House and it is a thing of great beauty. The hidden imagery! The red end papers! The design on the hardback underneath the slipcover!

His attention to detail, the easter eggs he hides in the cover that only become clear as you read, his perfectionism, the fact that he READS the books...all these things make him exceptional.

Also: Charlie's novel is crazy wonderful over-the-top insanity. Perfect match!

Thanks Lauren, I had to quickly grab the copy of The Spiral House lying in our office (for our b-day book hamper!) to have a closer look - and wow, the detail is amazing! I've added mention of it to the post.

The title of Charlie's novel got one of the loudest laughs of the evening when Lauren mentioned it at her TSG launch last week :)

Also Imraan Coovadia's Institute for Taxi Poetry, Maurice Broaddus' Kingmaker trilogy, some edgy YA he did recently for HarperCollins UK and lots more Wendig and deNooy.

And yeah, we spent the first five minutes of the Jenny & Co event featuring me and Claire Robertson talking about the wonder of his work.

And every time I say "Apocalypse Now Now", whoever I'm speaking to breaks out in a grin.
