Margaret von Klemperer Reviews My Children Have Faces by Carol Campbell

My Children Have FacesVerdict: carrot

SOUTH Africa has many forgotten people who have slipped through society’s widening cracks, but the Karretjiemense of the Karoo are probably more forgotten than most and are fast disappearing anyway.

A quaint sight, perhaps, for those charging along the N1 on the way to or from Cape Town, offering picturesque photo opportunities for tourists, but it will be hard to view them in the same light now Carol Campbell’s excellent short novel has given them a face, and a heartbreaking story.
