Winners of the 2013 Jan Rabie Rapport Prize and Media24 Books Literary Awards

Eloise Wessels, Ingrid Winterbach, MS Burger, Michelle Cooper and Ingrid Mennen

Ingrid Winterbach, Rustum Kozain, Stephen Ellis, MS Burger, Annelie Ferreira, Ingrid Mennen and Irene Berg trumped shortlists in their various categories to take awards at this year’s Media24 Books Literary Awards.

The winners of prizes to the value of R35 000 per category were announced at a gala event held at the Commodore Hotel and hosted by radio and TV presenter Liezl van der Westhuizen on Friday evening. The Media24 Books Literary Awards recognise work from publishers that fall under the domain of Media24, including NB and Jonathan Ball, while the Jan Rabie Rapport prize, won this year by MS Burger for her short story collection Bloedfamilie, is open to all publishers and recognises outstanding debut or early Afrikaans prose.

In her feedback on the awarding of the prestigious WA Hofmeyr Prize for best Afrikaans literary work across all genres, scooped this year by Ingrid Winterbach for Die aanspraak van lewende wesens prof Ronel Foster, one of the judges, remarked on the difficulty of comparing prose to poetry to determine the winner of this award. In her closing address on the evening, Eloise Wessels, CEO of NB Publishers, promised that they would create a prize specifically for poetry next year.

The awards were distributed as follows:

Kozain, Ellis and Ferreira were abroad and their awards were collected by their publishers on their behalf. Congratulations to all the winners!
