In a video series for Oxford University Press, Zakes Mda discussed some of his most well-known books, The Madonna of Excelsior, Ways of Dying and The Heart of Redness. He also read excerpts from the books and explained how he became an author.

Zakes says that his father, a teacher, introduced him to English classics, while his grandmother used to tell him the traditional isiXhosa stories. According to Mda, he started writing at age seven and had his first short story published when he was thirteen.
