Stephen King Pulls up a Carrot for The Shining Girls, Lauren Beukes’ Head Explodes

The Shining GirlsHorror master Stephen King has highlighted Lauren BeukesThe Shining Girls as a summer pick in the UK newspaper, The Times.

The event naturally caused commotion in Beukes’ brain:

King’s “review” is a short, straightforward summary of the novel’s plot, but concludes with a filip for Beukes’ “smart prose”. Here’s the piece in its wee entirety:

King will have had immediate sympathy for the title of Beukes’ book, one feels. His supernatural thriller The Shining was first published in 1977 and has rarely, if ever, been out of print. It’s the beneficiary of a sequel, Doctor Sleep, out later this year.

Just how much commotion the attention from King caused in Beukes’ brain is revealed in a Twitter convo she had with Margie Orford. (Caution, the image in the link is disturbing!)

Beukes wouldn’t say whether she was writing a sequel to her novel called The Sleeping Girls ;).

How did I miss this? Not just the fabulousness about SK and Lauren's exploding head -- the fact that the Times image shows The Shining Girls (as enjoyed by Mr King) rubbing up against CLR James's Beyond a Boundary (accurately described as "perhaps the finest cricket book ever written"). This is not a pairing I ever thought I would see. *happiness*
