Masande Ntshanga Makes the Shortlist for the PEN International 2013 New Voices Award

Alert! Masande Ntshanga’s short story “Space” has made the shortlist of three for PEN International’s inaugural New Voices Award.

Tomorrow Iâ��ll Be TwentyAfrican Gender ScholarshipNtshanga, currently enrolled in UCT’s MA Creative Writing program, will join his fellow shortlistees, Mexican candidate José Pablo Salas with his story “Falcon Season” and Canadian nominee Claire Battershill with her entry “The Collective Name for Ninjas”, at the 79th PEN International annual Congress in Iceland, where they will read their work.

The winner of will be announced on 11 September and will receive $1000 prize money, as well as having their story featured in the PEN International magazine. The award was established to encourage new writing in the countries in which PEN International operates and is judged this year by Hephzibah Anderson, Bibi Bakare-Yusuf, Carole Blake, Alain Mabanckou, Sjón, and Luisa Valenzuela.

Entries were received from all over the world, which were whittled down to a longlist of six, before the three top text were chosen. The shortlisted stories can be read on PEN International’s website.

Below are the top three texts selected by our panel of distinguished experts. We would like to thank all the candidates who entered the competition, the PEN Centres who nominated them and the panel of six judges for all their hard work.
