Open Book and Cape Town Central Library Break World Record for Longest Book Domino Chain

It’s not official yet, as the record attempt needs to be verified by Guinness World Records, but this morning Open Book, in partnership with Cape Town Central Library, toppled a “domino” line of 2 586 books – the longest ever in history.

The previous record was set earlier this year by the Seattle Public Library at 2 131 books. With books donated by the Friends of the Library, as well as some of Cape Town Central Library’s own stock, Open Book topped this amount by 455 books.

Open Book and Cape Town Central Library staff diligently set up all the books and this morning had their hands full with portions of the “domino” lines collapsing at random, before the official attempts at the record could be made. Crime novelist Margie Orford had the honour of toppling the first book, which fittingly happened to be The Domino Principle by Adam Kennedy.

The first attempt went halfway, but was ultimately unsuccessful. However, Open Book staff, Central Library staff and volunteers refused to give up and put the books back in their starting positions for another try. After all, the Seattle Public Library were only successful on their fifth try, an achievement they finally attained after 7 hours.

All the hard work paid off. Open Book and Cape Town Central Library made it with their second try! All the books fell over, spelling “Central Library” and “Open Book” and ending in a heart shape.

This was the first, unsuccessful, attempt:

And now, watch the second attempt, which broke the record!

It was the best bookish fun I've ever had! So much palpable anxiety in the air. So awesome to have been there.
