Walter Bgoya Will Be the Guest of the Fair at the 2013 Jozi Book Fair

Alert! In its latest newsletter, the Jozi Book Fair has revealed that this year’s Guest of the Fair will be Tanzanian publisher, children’s author and activist, Walter Bgoya. He will be joined by his compatriots, academic activist Professor Issa Shivji and promoter of children’s literature Pilli Dumea, at Museum Africa from 25-26 October 2013.

Among other events, Bgoya and Shivji will participate in a public meeting at the University of Johannesburg on “The thought of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere”. Other illustrious guests from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sweden and South Africa are also expected at the Jozi Book Fair. Ugandan writer Dolar Vasani is the featured writer in this newsletter of the Fair.

The 2013 Jozi Book Fair will include conversations with authors, roundtable discussions on issues pertaining to the publishing industry and the 2014 elections, and seminars on women, power and sexuality in South Africa. There will also be a dedicated programme for youth, focusing on youth literature and including book-related skills workshops, in which Nal’ibali will be involved. The Fair promotes indigenous languages and this year focuses on isiXhosa, Setswana and Afrikaans.

In partnership with the Tri Continental Human Rights Film Festival, documentaries will be shown and engaged with at the Fair. This year the Fair will also host a conference based on its theme “Reading the Word and the World: the Role of Libraries”. The conference will take place on Thursday, 24 October 2013 at Museum Africa.
