Link Love: Introducing EverEgg, a New Mobile Book Reader for Mxit

EverEgg, a new mobile book reader for Mxit, makes uploading books, editing them, and setting prices easy for publishers and authors. Pan Macmillan, New Africa Books, Modjaji Books, and Burnet Media are some of the publishers who have already signed up to the platform, where Mxit users will be able to buy books to read on their smartphones.

EverEgg was launched by Karen Brooks, author of such books as Emily and the Sprites of Light and Emily and the Battle of the Veil, and designed by Kazazoom, with the backing of Alan Knott Craig Jnr’s latest venture, EverAfrica.

According to a press release sent out by Brooks, EverEgg will build on the success of the 2008 platform Mbooks, which “sold 11 000 chapters of the first book loaded in just one month”. Compared to Mbooks, however, EverEgg will provide much more flexibility and freedom to publishers and authors.

Mxit’s Facebook page names some of the books already available on EverEgg, including Anele Mdoda’s It Feels Wrong to Laugh, But, Danny K’s and Anything for Money by Lauri Kubuitsile. You can get the first chapter of the latter free when you sign up to the platform. Simply search for “EverEgg” in the Mxit App Store.

Press release

Karen Brooks, a prominent local digital entrepreneur and author, has launched a new mobile book reading platform called EverEgg. The platform was developed by Kazazoom – a South African technology innovation company that develops content and services for Mxit – and has the additional backing of EverAfrica – a new venture led by Alan Knott Craig Jnr. EverEgg will make consuming content easy and accessible for Mxit’s vast community of mobile users.

Packed with the very latest in fantasy, reality, horror, romance and other genres, the books and content supplied by EverEgg will undoubtedly find an eager audience in Mxit’s predominantly young community.

Brooks, who launched Mbooks – a mobile book reader – on Mxit in 2008, and was one of the 10 finalists pitching at the Africa 2.0 startup event earlier this year, explains why EverEgg is such an important addition to the growing Mxit platform:

“When Mbooks first launched on Mxit, I couldn’t load my own content – but I knew that if I could find the right partners we’d create something transformative and easier for both the content producers and consumers.”

She adds: “Now, with EverEgg, large or indie publishers, as well as talented local authors can load their own books or short stories onto the platform…Think of it as your eBook reader for feature phones and smart phones!”

Indeed, among EverEgg’s distinguishing features is that it allows publishers to quickly and easily load their own content as well as to edit it, and set pricing as they wish. Already on board are Panmacmillan, New Africa Books, Modjaji Books, and Burnet Media. EverEgg is now in talks with their first international publisher. New publishers can contact

“We were passionate about creating a smooth and easy to use mobile reader experience that works on both feature phones and smartphones,” adds Kazazoom’s founder and Technology Lead, Eric Clements. “So we came up with a solution that adapts words per page to make chapters easily readable on different size phone screens.”

In 2008, the Mbooks platform sold 11 000 chapters of the first book loaded in just one month. EverEgg will look to build on the success of the previous platform by making it more accessible to a wider community of users, and by focusing on providing high quality content with a smooth reading experience. Key to the reading experience is the platform’s impressive rendering that tailors content to various devices.

To get reading simply go to the Mxit App Store and search for “EverEgg”.
