Missing and Murdered by Alan G Morris Wins 2013 WW Howells Book Prize in Biological Anthropology

Missing and MurderedAlan G Morris’ Missing and Murdered, which relates his experience of forensic anthropology in South Africa, has been awarded the prestigious WW Howells Book Prize in Biological Anthropology 2013.

The award is administered through the Biological Anthropology Section of the American Anthropological Association and will be presented to Morris in Chicago in November.

Following the announcement of the award, the University of Cape Town’s Monday Monthly spoke to Morris about his work in skeletal biology “and the stories bones tell about the original people”:

A book about the stories told by human bones recovered in South Africa was recently awarded a prestigious international award.

Missing and Murdered: A Personal Adventure into Forensic Anthropology by UCT’s Professor Alan Morris was awarded the 2013 WW Howells Book Prize by the biological anthropology section of the American Anthropological Association.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that this year’s WW Howells Book Prize in Biological Anthropology is awarded to Alan G. Morris for his book, Missing and Murdered: A Personal Adventure in Forensic Anthropology, published by Zebra Press (2011).

The book is a fascinating narrative of Alan’s career as a forensic anthropologist in South Africa that seamlessly illustrates the importance of anthropological, medical, legal, political, and social issues in forensic anthropology.

This award is administered through the Biological Anthropology Section (BAS) of the American Anthropological Association (AAA). Members of the 2013 W.W. Howells Book Prize selection committee were: Rachel Caspari, Katherine MacKinnon, Jon Marks, and Sara Stinson (chair).

The award will be presented at the BAS Business meeting in November, in Chicago.
