The 2013 South African Literary Award (SALA) Winners

The South African Literary Awards (SALA) were announced on Saturday at the 2nd Africa Century International African Writers Conference at Museum Africa. The prizes were presented by wRite associates in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture and the SABC.

For the Mercy of Water by Karen Jayes, which also won the 2013 Sunday Times Fiction Prize, was awarded the prestigious K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award. Afrikaans writer PG du Plessis, who last year won the R450 000 Helgaard Steyn Prize for Fees van die ongenooides, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his entire oeuvre. Other SALA winners include Ashraf Kagee, Etienne van Heerden, Nhlanhla Maake, Petra Müller, and Books LIVE member Imraan Coovadia.

The prizes were distributed as follows:
