Donovan Marsh has signed on to direct the film adaptation of Lauren Beukes’ Zoo City, reports Charl Blignaut for City Press. Marsh directed Spud and Spud 2: The Madness Continues, as well as heist thriller iNumber Number, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was bought by Universal for a Hollywood remake. Blignaut writes that Beukes has contributed to the screenplay.
Zoo City producer, Helena Spring, commented that both Marsh and Beukes are rising stars and will “make a kick-ass team”. Marsh said that he is a huge fan of Beukes: “She has revolutionised the sci-fi genre. The film has the potential to be massive.” Both Marsh and Spring emphasised the importance that computer generated imagery (CGI) will play in portraying the creatures that are “animalled” to some of the characters and said that they are hoping to use a local team for this. Spring confirmed that the film will be shot here using local and international actors.
A significant new South African creature-effect movie is on track and it has the potential to become the biggest news in the local industry since District 9.
It’s the film adaptation of the gritty fantasy novel Zoo City by international award-winning novelist Lauren Beukes.
